Exploring Houston's Vegan Scene

Since moving to Houston, I've been staking out all the vegan restaurants or restaurants with vegan items that I'd like to try. The list is ... long. I was not surprised to find vegan restaurants in a metropolitan city like Houston, but I was surprised to find such a huge variety of vegan restaurants. If you have a hankering for a certain food, I can almost gaurantee you can find a vegan version in this town.

Here's my shortlist of vegan restaurants in Houston that I can't wait to get to (don't worry, I'll share my reviews once I visit!) and that I hope you'll check out, too.

Mo' Better Brews

What's Special: Coffee, vegan food, vinyl. Sounds like an incredible vibe to me! This restaurant has the most exciting brunch menu, and I think it's going to take me two or three visits to try everything that I want to taste based on the photos alone. The place is also open for dinner on Friday nights.

Menu Must-Tries: Chikn-fried mushrooms and waffles? Um, yes. And the donut breakfast sandwich also looks sinfully and ridiculously delicious.

Cascabel Vegan

What's Special: As a former Californian, mexican food is a staple in my diet. I'm looking forward to going to a Mexican restaurant where literally everything on the menu is "safe" for me to try!

Menu Must-Tries: Birria is not something I ever thought I would get to experience, and so, to be honest, all the birria craze that I've seen online in recent years had me a little jealous. But this restaurant offers birria tacos veganized, and more birria eats, and I can't wait to see what all the fuss is about.

Govinda's Vegetarian Cuisine

Website: Govinda's

What's Special: This vegetarian and vegan spot is located in the International Society for Krishna Consciousness temple. Hard to find a more unique place to dine in Houston than that! But perhaps even more shocking is the price tag; Govinda's offers a dine-in all vegan buffet for only $12.95 Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The other days, expect a mix of vegetarian fare.

Menu Must-Tries: The mixed vegetable pakora and the BBQ tofu are definitely on my buffet plate.

Trendy Vegan

Website: Trendy Vegan

What's Special: Trendy Vegan is a plant-based Asian restaurant that I am really excited to try. I love Asian flavors, but find navigating a traditional Asian menu to be a bit of a guessing game. Well, no guessing games here; everything is plant-based and everything looks delicious!

Menu Must-Tries: One of my old fast food go-to's when I was young was the eggplant tofu at Panda Express, and I've missed it ever since! So, the garlic sauce eggplant is definitely on my list, as is the veggie bao, which are often hard to find in a vegan version.

Whether you're a seasoned vegan or just curious about plant-based options, these spots promise delicious meals that receive rave reviews online. While I wouldn't consider many of these items "health foods," I do think we have to strike a balance between enjoying ourselves and fueling our bodies. It's amazing that we have so many vegan restaurant options right here in Houston to help us do just that!
